Riddle of Fire and Brotherhood are basically just Blood for Blood and Internal Release 2.0 now that they've removed cross Classes and so many other skills from the job. The last skill Monk received that it uses rotationally which also isn't just direct replacement for skills they've removed from the job was Elixir Field at level 56. Lack of new skills that people can actually be excited about. Similarly, after Stormblood Monk was so poorly received that the devs admitted it was a design misstep, they released Shadowbringers Monk which had every single problem people had with Stormblood Monk (crit RNG, slow, stupid fist stances, useless actions). Some of the problems that existed in Heavensward, still exist in fact. None of those problems got fixed in Heavensward, and in fact many of them didn't get fixed into deep into Stormblood's patch cycle. Monk had so many problems in Heavensward that it was basically the worst DPS for the entire expansion. They didn't know what to do in Shadowbringers either so they just threw a bunch of stuff at it, a lot of it which repeated the same problems it had in Stormblood, which turned the playerbase of the job people already had problems with into a forum angry mob.įailure to respond to a staggering amount of negative feedback over the last three expansions. This was stuff like a slow, pointless Fist Stance interactions on Shoulder Tackle which did nothing (until 4.2, but what happened there was an accident), and double layered Crit RNG. The devs dug in their heels at the time and asked people to just try it out, but later admitted that they didn't know what to do with the job in Stormblood so they added unpopular stuff in the hopes of making something stick. ![]() In Stormblood Monk's new additions were basically a number of things which the playerbase actively did not want on the level of Bard's having cast timers in Heavensward. Lack of developer vision between expansions has lead to questionable additions to the kit. On some level this is the big tent problem under which all the other issues are subcategories of. It went from having solid sustained damage to having really weak sustain, counteracted by RNG and an enormous burst in Stormblood, but it still maintained a huge number of positionals and trade offs that it had as the greedy job (Which Samurai doesn't suffer from). Monk in turn became the "kinda high damage, really weak buffs" job and the transition has been rough. It had the same somewhat non-linear rotation Monk had favoring a priority system on buffs, skills that didn't break combos, a Counter Attack System that actually worked, and it abandoned the super slow ramp up Monk had for G元 in favor of getting two buffs which only took a combo and a half. However they gave the "All damage no party buffs" identity to Samurai in Stormblood, a job which took and improved on a lot of Monk's design principles while fixing or abandoning what didn't work. You could do the most damage (in theory, lol Heavensward balance) but you had to work for it. It was conceptualized as the original "All Damage, No Party buffs" melee in ARR/HW and it's design reflected how that worked at the time, with a slower ramp up, a large number of positionals, and some niche optimization options. Monk has had an identity crisis for two expansions now that's basically gone unspoken.
